Daniel Levi Heynderickx Kavale

I am a 21 year old multi-discipline artist from the Pacific Northwest. My first time touching clay was much like most kids in school, making terrible coil bowls that my parents still have and cherish today. Just as much as they cherish the first bowl I threw on the wheel when I began taking ceramics classes at my local community center at 14. After a break from ceramics to focus on digital, 2D work, sewing, and growing up.. I decided to enroll in a ceramics course at Portland Community College. I spent three years learning everything from glaze formulation to building kilns, and everything in-between. I am currently attending the Pacific Northwest College of Art for a BFA in sculpture.

The main themes of my work are independence, isolation, and depiction of unconditional love, which I have a deep-seated belief that I am unable or undeserving of experiencing. To express this I use many mediums from digital, to acrylic, oil and watercolor paint, to clay and metal. I am particularly drawn to clay and ceramics as a medium due to the weight of the material and the significance of its permanence on the earth. I focus on the canine form, specifically domesticated dogs as I believe our pets and the animals in our lives are the closest representation of unconditional and unrelenting love. I want to share myself with the world without having to voice it, and I use art to express those indescribable feelings. To bring my whole self into being, I must continue to make artwork, and I must continue to learn.
